Due to suffering a torn labrum in the season opener against Miami, free-agent middle linebacker Andra Davis wasn’t able to have the kind of impact the Bills hoped for. the team ranks 32nd against the run. But Davis, who went on season-ending injured reserve this week after his shoulder just became too painful to play with, will be missed. He was well-versed in the 3-4 scheme Buffalo has been trying to get established in fits and starts and he played hard.

Picking up the slack the final half of the season will be two other veterans, Akin Ayodele and Reggie Torbor. each has experience and plays a rugged style but they have limitations.

"Akin’s a big, strong guy that has played well for us between the tackles. He’s really done a good job," coach Chan Gailey said. "He’s like most of those big inside linebackers; you don’t like to get them matched up one-on-one in the open field, but understanding the defense and playing physical, downhill football — he’s done a good job. To me, he has improved from the first week we got him until now."

"He’s giving us a little bit of a bump there, when he’s been able to go inside and play," Gailey said. "we feel like we’ve been able to shore that spot up pretty well."

And when you’re last against the run, you can only go up.

–OLB Shawne Merriman, claimed off waivers last week, was ruled out of Sunday’s game with an Achilles injury. Merriman was injured 10 minutes into his first practice with the Bills on Wednesday. Coach Chan Gailey called Merriman’s injury a "strained" Achilles. He said it’s not a long-term deal but could not predict when Merriman would see his first game action. It’s the same Achilles the three-time Pro Bowler injured in the preseason with San Diego.

–WR Lee Evans, nursing an ankle injury, returned to practice and is expected to be fine for Sunday’s game against Detroit.

–RB C.J. Spiller will add punt-return chores this week. the first-round pick already returns kickoffs and will take over Roscoe Parrish’s punt return role. Parrish was placed on injured reserve with a broken wrist.

–WR David Nelson, a rookie free agent from the University of Florida, will have his role increase now that Roscoe Parrish is out for the year with a broken wrist. Nelson has 17 catches for 189 yards to date and will play the No. 3 slot role for a Bills offense that has risen to 23rd in passing.

–RT Cordaro Howard did not practice Thursday or Friday with a shoulder injury and is listed as doubtful for Sunday’s game.

–LB Chris Kelsay, who rested on Wednesday with a sore knee, practiced fully on Thursday. He’ll be fine for Sunday’s game.

GAME PLAN the Bills return home for the first time since Oct. 10 and should be feeling energized despite their 0-8 record. the Lions (2-6) will be motivated to keep the Bills winless and on course to match their 0-16 record set two years ago. Detroit, whose roster is stocked with high picks, threw a scare into the Jets last week before losing 23-20 in overtime but will be without starting QB Matt Stafford (shoulder). Buffalo’s game plan should be simple: Harass backup Shaun Hill, who should be rusty coming off a broken forearm, into mistakes.

Offensively, line play must be solid. the Lions, led by prized rookie DT Ndamukong Suh, have collected 24 sacks already, 15.5 by their defensive line. the Bills need a collective team effort to pick up the slack for the loss of WR/PR Roscoe Parrish (broken wrist), one of their few sparkplugs.

MATCHUPS TO WATCH Bills secondary, which has yet to intercept a pass, vs. Lions backup QB Shaun Hill, who has nine TDs and seven interceptions in five starts this season.

LAS VEGAS (Reuters) – Latin music’s biggest night, the Latin Grammys, got underway in Las Vegas on Thursday with Mexican trio Camila picking up two early awards, record of the year for “Mientes” and best pop album by a duo or group with “Dejarte de Amar.”

Spain’s Alejandro Sanz won the best male pop vocal album Grammy for “Paraiso Express,” and another early trophy was claimed by Cuban-Canadian singer-songwriter Alex Cuba for best new artist.

Cuba, whose music reflects a mixture of Latin, African, jazz and pop influences, is also known for a 2009 duet with pop star and fellow Canadian Nelly Furtado called “Mi plan.” Cuba co-wrote half the songs on Furtado’s Spanish-language album of the same name.

Venezuelan reggaeton duo Chino y Nacho won best urban music album for “Mi Nina Bonita.”

From Mexican ranchera music to Brazilian samba, the Latin Grammys recognize music from all over the world so long as it is recorded in Spanish or Portuguese. The awards are presented during a live broadcast on Spanish-language television network Univision.

The show, hosted by Mexican actors Eugenio Derbez and Lucero, featured performances early in the evening by Dominican merengue star Juan Luis Guerra and pop singers Enrique Iglesias and Marc Anthony, among others.

Pop sensation Ricky Martin presented the Latin Recording Academy’s Person of the Year award to Spanish opera star Placido Domingo, who was recognized for both his philanthropic and professional accomplishments. Domingo is the sole performer left of the famed Three Tenors after Luciano Pavarotti died in 2007 and Jose Carreras retired last year.

Earlier in the day, 34 Latin Grammys were awarded during a one-hour ceremony streamed live on the Web. Argentina’s Gustavo Cerati was the big winner at that event, picking up early awards for best rock album and song.

Cerati, who has been in a coma since suffering a stroke earlier this year, has been a fixture in Latin music for decades. he fronted the popular rock band Soda Stereo in the 1980s and ’90s before launching a solo career.

Cerati won the best rock album Latin Grammy for “Fuerza Natural” and best rock song award for “Deja Vu.”

Several elder statesman of Latin music picked up key awards, including Panamanian salsa singer Ruben Blades for best singer-songwriter album with “Cantares del Subdesarrollo,” Brazilian singer Gilberto Gil took home best MPB (musica popular brasileira) album for ” Banda Dois” and best native Brazilian roots album for “Fe Na Festa.”

Cuban trumpeter Arturo Sandoval won best instrumental album for “A Time For Love.”

The Seattle Times’ Larry Stone reports Dave Niahaus, Mariners broadcaster since the club’s inception in 1977, passed away earlier today after suffering a heart attack. A Hall of Fame inductee in 2008, Niehaus was synonymous with baseball in the Pacific Northwest, and is arguably as important figure in Mariners history as Ichiro, Ken Griffey Jr., A-Rod or Randy Johnson.

Rick Rizzs, Niehaus’ longtime partner was shocked by the news.

“what a loss,” Rizzs said. “Holy cow. I feel numb. he meant everything to Mariner baseball. everything. he was not only the voice of the Mariners, he WAS the Mariners. he was the face of the franchise. when you turned on the radio, everything was right with the world when you heard Dave’s voice.”

Former Mariners outfielder Jay Buhner worked with Niehaus in the booth and called him one of a kind.

“Words can’t describe what I am feeling right now,” Buhner said. “This is the saddest day of my life. it is like I am losing a Dad, someone that was a father figure to me. … he described everything with an art and painted a picture you could see in your mind. I’ve had the honor of working with him as a player and also in the broadcast booth, and there was no one better. he was a consummate pro at everything he did. I am going to miss everything about the guy — going to miss his face, his ugly white shoes and his awful sport coats.”

I'll be heading through Reno or Tahoe on a roadtrip. I want to stay at a hotel and casino that is safe. I'll have to leave some of my valuables in the car. Possibly a place with underground parking? and any suggestions for a hotel/casino that is cheap to stay at? I've never been. Thanks!

A number of them have garage parking so that shouldn't be a problem. you should call the hotels and ask what their security is.

7:27 a.M. — the IRS has demanded Alico Inc., a land management company based in LaBelle, pay $22.5 million – including $8 million in penalties – as part of a review of the tax returns from two subsidiaries.

Alico “does not agree with the IRS positions taken and intends to file a response outlining its stance on the disputed issues,” the company said in a statement Tuesday.

The dispute revolves around whether Alico Inc. was allowed to consolidate Agri Insurance and Alico-Agri on its tax returns and whether Alico, Agri-Insurance or Alico-Agri were dealers in real estate during 2005, 2006 and 2007.

If you’re one of the millions of Americans who have hunkered down over the past few years, saving instead of spending, making do with what you have rather than going after what you really want, now may be the time to rethink that position – especially if you’re tired of living with an old bathroom.

“After the economic catastrophe,” says Stephen Melman, the director of economic services for the National Association of Home Builders in Washington, D.C., “a lot of remodeling was focused on repairs – if there’s a leak, fix it. That psychology has softened now, and people are starting to see what they actually need and going back to larger projects.” Mortgage rates are staying low, Melman points out, and many people are refinancing not to get cash out of their homes but to lower their monthly payments. and with the extra money, some of them are sprucing up the place.

“Bathrooms are a more manageable job than kitchens,” says Sal Alfano, editorial director of Remodeling, a Washington, D.C.-based trade magazine for building professionals. “but they have a big impact.”

According to Remodeling’s Cost vs. Value Report for 2009-2010, a “midrange” bathroom renovation done in new England and priced at $17,018 can net you $11,677, or 69 percent of its cost, in added value to your home. An “upscale” project of $54,454 can give you a return of 62 percent of its cost.

So don’t feel bad if you can’t put up with cracked ceramic tiles or a rusty medicine cabinet for another minute. “It’s partly a rational decision to remodel and partly emotional,” says Alfano. “You can hold off on the rational stuff for awhile, but eventually the emotion takes over and you want to get it done.”

So what will give you the best bang for your bathroom-reno buck? The experts to whom we spoke made two points again and again.

First, before remodeling an existing bath, consider adding a new one instead. in a 2006 analysis of HUD/Census Bureau American Housing Survey data, researcher Paul Emrath of the National Association of Home Builders figured that an extra half bath adds up to 12.5 percent to a home’s value, and a second full bath as much as 20 percent. “The greater the disparity between beds and baths,” he says, “the more there is to gain by adding another bath.”

Though carving out another bathroom may seem impossible in an older home where space is at a premium, realtors agree that in a two-story house or condo it’s important to have, at minimum, one full bath on the bedroom floor and one half bath on the main living level. “otherwise it’s a huge negative,” says Frank Celeste of Gibson Sotheby’s in Charlestown. “I would suggest taking a closet for a half bath and throwing an armoire in the hallway. People use the lack of a half bath to negotiate the price down.”

Second, if you do decide to remodel your existing bath, keep in mind that the room is increasingly being seen as an in-home spa, and luxury is the watchword. “The bathroom is much more tied to ritual these days,” says Robin Brenner, owner of Billie Brenner ltd., which sells bathroom fixtures and fittings at the Boston Design Center. “It’s a place where you can relax for 10 minutes before running out to work, or unwind when you come home.”

Replicating the spa experience at home takes space, of course, but if you have it – or can steal some from a nearby closet or other spot – there are several features that are increasingly seen as must-haves:

Separate Tub and Shower Among the top 10 features that builders most likely would include in new houses in 2010, according to a National Association of Home Builders report released in January, were a separate tub and shower in the master – but if there’s not space for both, the bathtub gets left out. “I have a client who just bought a place that was renovated in 2008,” says Ryan Persac, a realtor with Prudential Unlimited in Brookline, “and he’s gutting the bathroom and putting in a huge shower with multiple heads. How many grown men take baths?”

Unlike in the master, realtors and builders usually recommend keeping the tub in a shared bathroom. “most of the time our advice is there should be at least one bathtub in the house, both for resale and if you have little kids and want to give them a bath,” says Paul Sullivan, president of The Sullivan co., a builder and remodeler in Newton.

Deluxe Shower “one of the things that people are looking at with their showers,” says Brenner, “is lots of functionality – water coming at them in multiple directions.” Steam showers and multiple shower heads complicate the plumbing and cost more, she admits, but are worth it if you have the space and money to install them. she recommends using a thermostatic shower valve, which allows you to program the temperature for all heads.

Curbless, roll-in showers are becoming more popular, too, partly because, as Persac points out, “people want to emulate the higher-end bathrooms they see in boutique hotels, which are often more open.” but they’re also more popular, Melman notes, because the population is aging and more people are thinking about growing older in their houses. “Not having to step over the tub can help you avoid injury,” he says, calling a curbless shower “probably one of the best investments you can make.”

Most of the experts we consulted also mentioned putting a seat in the shower. “Nobody ever sits there,” says Jeff Swanson, president of Renovation planning in the South end, “but women need it to shave their legs.” In-wall niches for holding soaps and shampoos are also popular.
